ReDefiners World Languages Senior Volunteer Opportunity in Tampa, Florida

Updated: Oct 1, 2022

Calling all seniors! ReDefiners World Languages is looking for volunteers who are passionate about using language to empower future generations of students. We need tutors and Out-Of-School-Time Learning volunteers to assist our professional team in teaching English, Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin to students and their caregivers.

Thanks to our partnership with AmeriCorps, a federal agency that connects individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges, we are now able to support 66 new volunteer positions for seniors age 55+ living in the Tampa Bay area.

Who We Are And What We Do: ReDefiners World Languages

ReDefiners is a pioneering non-profit organization with the goal of developing a compassionate community of global citizens, who are both economically and socially responsible, through world language and cultural enrichment. Education in global communication is paramount in developing cognitive skills, creating opportunities for upward mobility, and establishing a foundation to excel in an ever-increasing globalized society. We strive to provide local language learning opportunities in Arabic, English, Spanish, and Mandarin through our enrichment programs to youth and adults, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Our programs target children in grades k-5, along with their caregivers, in the Tampa Bay area and through virtual learning with a mission of promoting social change, creating equity in educational opportunities, providing a competitive advantage to youths and adults, and developing multilingual global citizens with an understanding and respect for different cultures.

Volunteering At ReDefiners

Volunteers play a crucial role in our day-to-day teaching operations. As an academic tutor and Out-Of-School-Time Learning volunteer, you will provide one-on-one academic tutoring to students tailored to their individual learning needs. The tutor will communicate regularly with caregivers on the student’s progress and encourage caregivers to take an active role in the student’s learning. Well-planned tutoring sessions last one hour and will follow a student-centered, communicative-focused format. E-Learning support and virtual class assistance may also be required.

Our ideal volunteer is someone who is enthusiastic about teaching young children and has some experience in creating educational resources and fostering learning environments. ReDefiners World Languages will provide volunteers with tutor training, resource guidance, weekly digital literacy and professional development training, and a collaborative team environment that includes weekly meetings and quarterly gatherings.

Why Volunteer

The ReDefiners World Languages community is excited to connect with individuals that are ready to make an impact on the lives of young students.

Our partner in this endeavor, AmeriCorps, provides some helpful facts about volunteering:

  • 84% of volunteers report stable or improving health after one year of service. Many volunteers report decreased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

  • 88% of volunteers who felt a lack of companionship reported fewer feelings of isolation after becoming an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer.

  • AmeriCorps Senior volunteers often tap their wealth of experience and wisdom and channel it in new directions, such as developing new skills and connecting with a broader community.
