Virtual Learning – Why it's good for Children and Adults
Updated: Feb 21
With the advent of virtual learning, the field of education has broadened its reach far beyond the physical classroom. Now both students and adults can experience low-cost, top-notch education from anywhere in the world.
At ReDefiners World Languages, we are taking advantage of the growing popularity of online education as part of our mission to reach as many people as we can. We strive to use our language learning program to promote social change, create equity in educational opportunities, and provide a competitive advantage to children and adults. We’ve found that the best way to achieve this goal is through virtual learning classes that create unmatched opportunities for our students.
Learn From Anywhere
Virtual learning gives you the freedom to take classes from anywhere. As long as your internet connection is stable, you can learn from home, the coffee shop, and yes, even while sipping mai tais on the beach. With over 77% of public primary schools offering distance learning options and 75% of undergraduate college students partaking in at least one online class by the spring of 2020, the infrastructure for online learning has been thoroughly built and tested. With a WiFi password on hand, the classroom has no limits.
As distance learning and virtual classrooms continue to increase in popularity, teachers, too, are becoming more accustomed to remote teaching. Curriculums and lesson plans are centered around the online format so that the quality of education is not sacrificed for convenience. Teachers are taking advantage of the tools provided by online learning platforms to provide the best education possible. Flexible programs meet the needs of all students no matter the challenges:
Asynchronous learning is great for working adults
Self-paced classes offer a low-stress option for those with busy schedules
Face-to-face learning via communication tools is perfect for those who desire a more traditional classroom feel
Many programs offer certificates for serious learners
Find Great Teachers and Programs
The importance of a good teacher cannot be understated. Numerous studies have shown that a teacher has more impact on a student’s education than any other factor, and virtual classrooms are no different.
However, virtual learning has the advantage of allowing you to find the best teachers and programs regardless of where you are located. For example, many top universities offer online classes for the general public through their websites or third-party platforms: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, the University of Sydney, and of course, ReDefiners World Languages. Access to these institutions would be impossible for most people in a traditional setting, but now they are only a few clicks away.
Meet People From Around The World
Anyone can join a virtual class, no matter the country or time zone. This allows for the unparalleled opportunity to befriend people you would otherwise never have the chance to meet.
At ReDefiners, promoting multiculturalism and respect for cultural differences are core themes in our mission. We believe that meeting, learning, and befriending people of different cultures is best achieved through language – the medium of interaction and connection.
Learning interactions can be categorized into three groups
You will find all three types of interactions in the ReDefiners World Languages courses, and through them, you will cross paths with wonderful individuals far beyond your normal social circles.
Virtual learning classes tend to be significantly more affordable than brick-and-mortar school programs. The average cost of an in-person Spanish class is $30 per hour with private lessons being even higher at an average cost of $50 per hour – and that doesn’t include materials. Our online classes are $59 a month for multiple classes per week, making it well below the average.
Transportation will also factor into costs for in-person classes. The volatile price of gasoline and time spent in traffic are both costs that will need to be addressed. Virtual learning and online classes avoid that problem.
