Mindfulness and Language Learning - Tips For Learning A New Language

How mindfulness helps language learning.
Mindfulness means living in the present moment.

Students may be wondering if there is a way to practice a foreign language outside of their routine studies. Mindfulness is a notable meditation practice where one is tasked with focusing on their senses and feelings in that moment without passing any judgment on them - good or bad. Learning a new language does not have to be a stressful process. Much like mindfulness a student can practice their language skills in the moment without having to put anything aside. For example, throughout the day I will try to think for a few minutes in the language I am learning. If this exercise becomes too difficult, I will instead begin to describe mentally what I sense around me, from items in the room to the sounds I hear outside. These thoughts do not need to be complete. I prefer to start with simple phrases and build up to longer sentences in my non-native language. I have found that this exercise, even when done only a few times a week, greatly improves my fluency and confidence when conversing in a foreign language. It is an excellent way to both practice and quiz yourself on a language in a stress free environment where things like grades do not matter. Language learning is all about communication so even the first few words that come to a student’s mind are useful. Eventually you will construct a full sentence and from there you can express yourself in any way you want. It is all a part of your language-learning journey!
